The 90-minute show is a breezy comedy on everything that is amazing about Tamil culture, including, cinema, music, politics and current news and trends. It is a double-threat that brings together Jagan’s musical observations and original songs, and Mervyn’s funny, and spontaneous wit, the guaratees a heavy dose of humour.
“It was only a 15-minute script initially, which we developed after lot of refinement. We usually perform in open mics and gauge response and feedback. We make on-the-spot improvisations, add lines specific to the city we perform in, and make spontaneous jibes,” says Mervyn.
The duo’s first show, ‘Academy Awards’ was a runaway hit and inspired the collaboration that led to ‘Oru Time Pakalam’.
“We share the stage equally but since both of us are from different backgrounds, our shows are diverse, thus offering variety. The format is not the usual trolling. We make sure our comedy is effortless and not offensive,” says Jagan.
‘Oru Time Pakalam’ is an all-Tamil stand-up comedy Tamasha that promises a whole lot of laughter, and more fun. The success of the show in India, inspired the two to take to the skies, with Malaysia being their first stop.
“Our friends in comedy speak highly about Malaysian audiences. Their support and love for the comics are shown in the form of the immense energy that they give out. As performers, that is something that we hope for, as it contributes to a great show,” added Jagan.
Both ‘Oru Time Pakalam’ shows in Malaysia are produced by local producers, Goodtimes Ticketing Sdn. Bhd, who have introduced Chennai’s unique brand of comedy to Malaysian comedy lovers and continue to do so.
“Nothing beats comedy that is presented in your mother tongue. It adds a flavour that is lost when translated to another language. Before 2017, Malaysians, particularly the Tamil speaking community, were only exposed to music and movies in Tamil, now, they have another option, and they are loving it. We have worked with all of Chennai’s top comedians, and Jagan and Mervyn are headed for stardom, “said Vinodh Menon, CEO of Goodtimes Ticketing.
Oru Time Pakalam will be arriving on Malaysia’s shores on the 21st of June at the Performing Arts Centre of Penang (penangpac) at 8:30pm, followed by a show on the 22nd of June at PJ Live Arts which kicks-off at 8:00pm.
